Autodesk VIZ or Autodesk 3ds Max?

Autodesk VIZ is often perceived as being the "cut-down" version of 3ds Max, and in many ways that is true.

Autodesk VIZ and 3ds Max share an identical user interface so users can happily use switch between applications. However, 3ds Max features a more comprehensive range of functionality and sells at a premium of approximately 50% more than Autodesk VIZ.

The technology in Autodesk VIZ is fundamentally the same as 3ds Max, as it's built on the same established platform. This sometimes causes confusion as to which application to choose. According to Audoesk:

Autodesk VIZ is for: "Designers and rendering specialists who need to visualise data from a variety of Autodesk applications. Autodesk VIZ provides a rich environment for modeling, rendering, and animation. VIZ is targeted for designers who need to produce high-quality images of their work and do not need many of the more advanced multimedia features of 3ds Max, such as character animation or special effects."
3ds Max is for: "General 3D modeling, rendering, and animation for advanced visualisation designers in a variety of disciplines, including architectural, graphic, and industrial design."
